The village of Mirissa, located a couple of kilometres beyond Weligama, is one of the most appealing places along southern Sri Lanka’s coastline to spend a few idyllic days by the sea.
Nestled in a pretty little bay, Mirissa’s beach is among the nicest in the region with its fine stretch of sand tucked into a cove rimmed by a lush thicket of swaying coconut palms.
After dark, when lights illuminate the sands, the beach transforms into an enchanting fairyland.
Though not completely unspoiled, development in Mirissa remains pleasingly low-key with a string of rustic restaurants and modest guesthouses rather than large resorts.
This creates a laidback yet vibrant atmosphere that attracts international travellers.
Over the past five years, Sri Lanka has emerged as a major whale-watching destination thanks to pioneering British marine biologist Charles Anderson.
In 1999, Anderson first proposed that blue and sperm whales migrate annually between the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, heading west past Sri Lanka in April and returning east in December/January.
His theory led to the dramatic discovery that Sri Lanka sits along a major cetacean migratory route, guaranteeing sightings of these majestic creatures for much of the year.

Sightings occur most regularly from December to April, with December and April being the peak months.
