About Negombo:
Negombo is the first beach resort that visitors and investors think of … mainly because of its proximity to Colombo and the international airport, just 10 km away. Many visitors go directly to the beach hotels here when they arrive on the island or will stay here after touring as their last place to visit before flying home. Today it is home to lots of foreign settlers from Europe (UK, Germany and the Netherlands) who have opened businesses or restaurants nearby.
Negombo offers an intriguing glimpse of Sri Lankan coastal life with a bustling fish market, colonial architecture and hundreds of colourful wooden boats.
Negombo has a long history of foreign influence that has shaped its cosmopolitan character and the Portuguese were the first Europeans here converting many locals to Christianity.
Remnants of this era remain visible in the imposing churches and Catholic shrines throughout the town.
Later on, the Dutch transformed Negombo into a thriving commercial hub by building a canal and a fort to transport valuable cinnamon and other spices to the coast for trade abroad.
Today, tourism and fishing drive the local economy – the sea provides tuna, mahi mahi and squid while the lagoon yields prized prawns, crab and lobster.
Negombo offers one of Sri Lanka’s best selections of restaurants and given the town’s proximity to the Negombo lagoon, a prime source of exceptional prawns and crabs, it remains a great place for fresh seafood.
During high season, Negombo sees the liveliest nightlife on the West coast centred around Rodeo Bar and Pub Sherry on the North end of the strip. The energy provides a taste of Sri Lanka’s most animated social scene.
Tip: visit the Sundown Rooftop Bar to watch the sunset; Prego for Italian food and Club Ceylon for fine dining.
Scattered around Negombo are various attractions like the Muthurajawela wetlands, Henerathgoda Botanical Gardens and a couple temples, any of which make for an enjoyable visit.
